And Now I Spill the Family Secrets

Kimball, Margaret

Commentary

An artist explores her childhood and family dynamics, as the title suggests. One of the many intriguing artistic choices Margaret Kimball makes is to depict the interiors of the spaces she is recalling without showing any people in them. This gives the entire memoir a haunted, abandoned, almost photojournalistic quality, and it’s very effective. Her family situation may be unique, but her winding journey to uncover what was really going on in her childhood feels universal.
