Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché

Green, Pamela B., director

Commentary

Imagine a pioneer in the earliest days of film, immediately grasping the possibilities of the new medium decades before they became mainstream: Color. Sound. Music. Editing. Physical comedy combined with subversive scripts. Surely we would have heard about this visionary if they had existed, no? No! Turns out that Alice Guy-Blaché (pronounced uh-LEESE ghee blah-SHAY) was in fact that visionary—and after a long and successful career was promptly written right out of film history. Pamela Green does posterity a favor by working the archives, attempting to rescue irreplaceable films from destruction, and gathering a coherent narrative as to Guy-Blaché’s trajectory. The documentary helpfully illustrates her genius and combats the patriarchal erasure of her life and work.
