Commentary

Just as one can take yoga classes productively without knowing anything about reincarnation, mindfulness as a psychological health practice has been secularized and separated from its Buddhist roots. But there is also benefit in understanding the rich tradition of compassion and acceptance that mindfulness developed from. Stephen Batchelor’s short, pithy volume expands on the main themes of Buddhist philosophy, but sets them in the contemporary context of a largely secular world. He argues for a secular Buddhism shorn of religiosity but full of engagement in today’s world. Profound and provocative.
