John Patrick Shanley’s meditation on doubt of all kinds—religious doubt, self-doubt, doubt about society—is deftly executed onscreen. Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams are all pitch perfect, as is Viola Davis in a short but important cameo role.
