Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands

Commentary

Working as one of the few females in a hypermasculine environment poses many challenges that go beyond just trying to do your job. Kate Beaton learned this all too well by deciding to follow many others and make good money in the oil fields of Canada to pay off her student loans. By not demarcating where one anecdote ends and another begins, Beaton not only mirrors the seemingly relentless nature of the experience, but also forces the reader to slow down and pay attention. Beaton captures humor, irony, and nuance while not flinching from the underlying horror and fraught aspect of the whole situation, which includes personal grief as well as environmental and cultural devastation.
