Full disclosure: I was already predisposed to like this documentary because I myself attended Boys State back in the day; plus, it was filmed close by. Setting all that aside, though, the film is a winner because it takes a simple premise—a competitive group of Missouri high school girls go to a mock government camp for a week—and shows how social, economic, and political realities impact the entire experience. The girls highlighted in the film win you over, and the Missouri Boys State that happens simultaneously on the same campus adds another layer of complexity.
