Commentary

The Western as a genre has always been problematic with its roots in racism towards Native Americans. High Noon, however, is an exception. When an outlaw prepares to return to take over a small town—and everybody knows he is coming on the noon train—what is there to be done? In its own way the film poses the question of the problem of evil, and its symbolism is clear but ambiguous enough that it can be (and has been) used by many different political groups for justification. Setting aside the fascinating backstory behind its creation, the film makes a lot of interesting points about bravery, responsibility, community, and how to confront violence and injustice.
