Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story

Commentary

Julia Wertz’s memoir of being a twentysomething in New York City and struggling with depression and alcohol is actually funny—no, actually, very funny. While she is unsparing in detailing how her life got out of control without her exactly realizing it, she and her friends and relatives are incredibly witty and snarky with one another. To be so vulnerable and so quick at the same time is a delightful combination, as is Wertz’s ability to draw cartoon-ish illustrations along with amazingly detailed and realistic cityscapes. Authentic and moving.
