The double meanings in the title give you a sense of Alisa Roth’s moral outrage. She goes all the way back to the founding of the republic to traces the intertwining of mental illness, criminality, and using the mentally ill as entertainment. She also amply illustrates why current prison conditions are entirely unacceptable for addressing inmates’ genuine mental health needs. Infuriating but necessary research.
