Miller, Chanel

Commentary
Chanel Miller was outraged when her wealthy and privileged assailant got off with a light sentence (the judge was concerned about the bright future he had ahead of him). Shortly after the verdict, Miller’s anonymously posted response—both furious and articulate—went viral. In this memoir, Miller goes back through it all, in meticulous detail, with vulnerability and honesty. Page after page, the cruel and arbitrary insensitivity of the legal system is exposed as Miller is put through humiliation after humiliation during the trial. But she also traces her personal evolution of trying to recover and make sense of it all, which on its own would have made for a moving memoir.
