Letters to a Young Poet

Rilke, Ranier Maria

Medium:

Book

Commentary

In 1903, a young writer at a military academy in Austria wrote to a recent alumnus. He was hoping for advice on how to get his poetry published; what he got instead were ten timeless letters on art, creativity, love, relationships, death, and life. While Rilke’s poetry can at times be inscrutable, these letters are crystalline in their clarity.

Notes

Not only is The Norton Centenary Edition physically beautiful, but it also contains a fascinating history of its first English translation by the co-founder of the company, Mary Dows Herder Norton.
