Akira Kurosawa is understandably hailed as one of the great filmmakers of all time. Today the pacing of some of his films can feel slow and thus harder to access. Living is a beautiful adaptation of Kurosawa’s film Ikiru, transposed to 1950’s London. Bill Nighy plays a low-level bureaucrat who, through a turn of events, suddenly has to reevaluate what it means for him to be truly alive. Nighy’s performance is subtle and masterful, and the ongoing struggles between deadening conventions of society and vital humanity are illuminated.
