Going to school in the 1980s and 1990s, I was exposed to deconstruction in academic circles as a literary theory with political overtones and distinct limitations. Hannah Gadsby’s comedy special is more the kind of deconstruction I like. Gadsby ingeniously does a stand-up routine, and then brings her wit and intellect to dismantle the mechanisms that make her act funny in the first place. The closer she examines what she just did, the more uncomfortable we in the audience become. Challenging and hilarious all at once.
