Before there was the Internet, there was television, but both media generate an internal pressure to create an audience and attract eyeballs—at any cost. Paddy Chayevsky’s 1976 film remains both hilarious in concept and entirely prescient in its savage satire of network television (and, by extension, capitalism in general). The technology may have changed, but the underlying issues are exactly the same.
