Based on the novel by Judith Guest. Admittedly, much of white America is privileged and self-absorbed to the detriment of pretty much everyone else, but if you must take a foray into upper middle class WASP angst, this would be my recommended destination. Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland are a couple whose marriage is struggling under the weight of a family tragedy. Timothy Hutton plays their anguished and alienated son, and Judd Hirsch plays his therapist. Fairly archetypal in depicting how repression, silence, and denial leave us ill-equipped to handle the harsh realities of life. Writing, directing and acting all around are top notch.
