David Little is the award-winning illustrator of many popular and beloved children’s books. In contrast, this black-and-white graphic novel memoir looks unflinchingly at his emotionally harrowing childhood and how he managed to survive it (in no small part by escaping into art). Little’s use of space, line, and perspective are all masterful, and the portraits of his difficult family are precise and even at times sympathetic.
