The Act of Killing
Oppenheimer, Joshua, director
Medium:
Movie
Commentary
Unlike any other film I’ve seen. Oppenheimer started interviewing survivors of mass killings in 1965-1966 with the change of regime in Indonesia. As he was gathering these interviews, he discovered some perpetrators of the killings who were eager to talk about and re-enact what they had done. As a result, the film has a double action of both perpetrator and victim alike revisiting the horror, to different ends. As an American this film is a humbling experience, not just because we tend to know nothing about Indonesia (the most populous Muslim country in the world), but also because American film culture played a pivotal role in bringing the bloodshed about. The sequel The Look of Silence is equally riveting.
