The Death of Ivan Ilyich

Tolstoy, Leo

Medium:

Book

Commentary

Tolstoy’s novella is sometimes used as an introduction to philosophy in that it touches on ultimate concerns of life, death, and meaning. Ivan Ilyich is a low-level bureaucrat in Czarist Russia who, like many, is trying to get ahead in the world, but when he falls ill, he starts to question everything.
