Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy begins with The Golden Compass. A rich, inventive fantasy world that for my money ranks right up there with the Hunger Games, Narnia, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings. Once you start it’s hard not to get sucked in.
