The Loneliness of the Long Distance Cartoonist

Tomine, Adrian

Medium:

Commentary

Adrian Tomine, an accomplished artist, graphic novelist, and illustrator, recounts his path to success, but more as a hapless antihero than as a victor. Tomine’s self-deprecating humor is endearing and touching, but the absurd vices of the comic book community—racism, snobbery, and simple pettiness among them—are also on hand. Tomine’s account of what happened when he was interviewed by Terry Gross on Fresh Air is a mini-classic in itself.
