To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse
Fishman, Howard
Medium:
Book
Commentary
We owe Fishman a debt of gratitude for the time when he was at an acquaintance’s party, cocked his head and thought, “What is this music? I don’t recognize it.” This led him to discover Connie Converse, an eccentric and virtually unknown musician who can rightly claim the title of the first modern singer/songwriter—years before Bob Dylan did. Fishman worked for years researching this biography, and Converse’s music is now better known and more widely available. Converse was a true original whose creativity was ultimately eclipsed by her shyness, her scattered intellect, and her depression—which makes her story all the more fascinating.
