Women Talking
Polley, Sarah, director
Medium:
Movie
Commentary
Based on Miriam Toews’ novel, which in turn was inspired by a true story. An isolated religious sect discovers a sexual assault scandal in their group, and the women of the colony convene to decide what they should do next. (Although not its primary purpose, the film illustrates what I think the founding fathers intended when they conceived of Congress — democratic debate, of high moral purpose, dealing seriously with issues of life and death, and with all the strengths and drawbacks that come with genuine deliberation.) Toews’ novel is beautifully moving in its own way, and Polley masterfully translates it to the screen. The entire multi-generational ensemble uniformly gives top-notch performances.
